Floating the Salt River

All summer Fred has been wanting to go down the Salt River in his kayak. But it seemed every Saturday that we wanted to do it something else would come up and we weren't able to make it to the river. But yesterday we finally did it! Tyler was able to go with him and had a great time. Everyone was saying hi to him on the river and telling him that he would be the next Olympic rower. He felt pretty great. Tyler said that he and Fred hit a few small rapids and I was very grateful that Fred was the one on the kayak with him and not me! I have a feeling that if I hit those rapids, no matter how small they were, we would be swimming down river!!
Nathan, Derrick, Jared and I went down the river and set up a cooler and chairs while we waited for them to come down the river to us. It was really fun watching all the different people floating by. The boys were even able to see a crayfish (it looks like a mini-lobster) and some other tiny fish. Jared said that they weren't as cool as the fish in North Carolina though.

In the middle of the river was a stronger current than the rest and so Fred and I would wade out into the middle, hold the boys hands and then the current would pull them back. They thought this was so fun. It was pretty precarious for Fred and I though because we had to keep moving around in the current without falling as we tried to avoid the hundreds of people floating toward us on their tubes. But we survived! I feel like I was more of a tube target than Fred was!

I am so glad that we were able to go and it was a fun experience for the whole family.

I've wanted to go the Salt River since we moved here. It looks like so much fun.

And hey, the next time you want to set up a cooler on the side of a river, call me (you know if it's not just a family day, of course :P )!
